Daniel Boone Home Civil War History Event
April 26 - 27, 2008 Defiance, MO.
"A COMMUNITY PREPARES FOR WAR."
The year is 1861 and shots have been fired on Fort Sumter. The nation is now
at war. America's army was small and the call went out to all communities for
volunteers to take up arms. In Missouri, the question of supporting the Union,
or the newly formed Confederacy, was not as easily answered as in other areas of
the country. From the first shot, this conflict spilled over into the lives of
everyone. Citizens of this quiet community are being called on to leave their
families and march into the service. Visitors will have the chance to speak with
men and women making difficult decisions and fearing the worst, yet having to go
on with the daily activities needed for maintaining and sustaining life.

Historical Fort Osage: Sibley, MO. This reconstructed historic Fort, overlooking
the Missouri River, is portrayed as it was in 1812. It served as one of the
first U.S. outposts in the Louisiana Purchase. The garrison established U.S.
presence in the territory, while the factory employees engaged the Osage in
trade. The story of this important guardian of the frontier is told through
museum exhibits at the Visitor's Center and a living history program at the
Fort. Fort Osage is located at Sibley, Missouri on the Missouri River, 14 miles
northeast of Independence. From Kansas City take 24 Highway east to Buckner,
Missouri. Turn north at Sibley Street (BB Hwy.) and travel 2-3 miles, watching
carefully for directional signs. Drive through Sibley following the signs to
Fort Osage.
